Arise Magazine Fashion Week in Lagos

Arise magazine just recently concluded its fashion week in Lagos, Nigeria.

This is the 2nd show organised by the magazine following on from last years successsful show which included 51 designers, 81 models & 5 musical acts- one of them being Tinie Tempah. This year, the show contained 77 designers and over 50 models. Honestly, when I first heard about this, I didnt think much of it, but when I started to read into it more, I watched a few shows  and saw some photos & reviews, I realised how good it was.

Arise has successfully run of three seasons of the Arise Africa Fashion Collectives at New York Fashion Week from 2009, 2010 and 2011. ARISE Magazine founder Nduka Obaigbena says: “There has been a surge of interest from around the world including major UK and  American brands this year, following our successful inaugural event last year, which is why we have decided to give even more  designers an opportunity to participate. The world has recognised that Nigeria has much to offer in the way of vibrancy and extraordinary talent in abundance making it the cultural capital of Africa. Once more we are proud to be associated with nurturing  new designers from the vast continent – and continuing our support of those who are more well-known in Nigeria and in the  Diaspora.”

I’ve added a few photos from the show below. In my opinion, Some of the designs are far better than some famous designers you hear about from the usual fashion weeks (New York, Milan, London, Paris). This is an authentic african show- their clothes actually make sense.

A lot of people hear africa and they think poverty. They hear africa, they think starving children, and its actually a lot more than that. (Supermodel Alek Wek also attended the event.)

Let me know what you think 🙂,

Over to you! What do you think?
